Côte d’Ivoire accelerates energy reforms and solar expansion

Côte d’Ivoire is accelerating its energy transition through the National Energy Compact and the Mission 300 initiative. The government aims to achieve universal electricity access, 50 per cent clean cooking access, and a 45 per cent share of renewables in the energy mix by 2030. To reach these targets, the country requires an estimated US$15.02 billion in investment, with approximately US$6.56 billion still needed.

Recent progress includes the expansion of renewable energy, which currently accounts for 34 per cent of the energy mix. In Ferkessédougou, the Ferké Solar plant, developed by PFO Énergie, has begun contributing to the national grid. The facility utilizes over 73,000 photovoltaic panels and is expected to produce nearly 90 gigawatt-hours of electricity annually, impacting approximately 370,000 households.

While progress has been made, including over 684,000 new electricity connections in 2025, implementation of the National Energy Compact remains uneven. Priority areas for future reform include tariff adjustments, mini-grid regulations, and regional electricity integration.
