Côte d’Ivoire and Mali signal potential diplomatic thaw

Diplomatic relations between Côte d’Ivoire and Mali may be entering a period of rapprochement. Following political tensions, signals suggest a renewed willingness to engage in dialogue regarding security and economic matters.

A significant Ivorian delegation is expected to arrive in Bamako on October 15 at the invitation of Malian services. Reports indicate that Presidents Alassane Ouattara and Assimi Goïta have validated this meeting. This move follows previous statements from Ivorian Defense Minister Téné Birahima Ouattara, who emphasized that no single country can combat terrorist threats alone.

Economic ties remain a critical driver for stability. The Port of Abidjan serves as a strategic gateway for Malian goods, with transit traffic to Mali increasing by 83.1% between 2024 and 2025, reaching 1.5 million tonnes.
