Diplomatic engagement in Côte d’Ivoire
Overview
Côte d’Ivoire has engaged in several diplomatic efforts to strengthen regional ties. In mid-October 2026, signals emerged of a potential rapprochement with Mali following periods of political tension. An Ivorian delegation was scheduled to visit Bamako on October 15 at the invitation of Malian authorities, a move validated by Presidents Alassane Ouattara and Assimi Goïta to discuss security and economic matters.
Economic cooperation remains a central factor, particularly regarding the Port of Abidjan, which serves as a strategic gateway for Malian goods. Following these developments, Senegalese Prime Minister Ahmadou Al Aminou Lô conducted a two-day working visit to Côte d’Ivoire on October 18–19, 2026. Welcomed by Ivorian Prime Minister Robert Beugré Mambé, the discussions aimed to revitalize the Dakar-Abidjan axis and expand cooperation into strategic sectors such as digital transformation, cybersecurity, agriculture, energy, and security.
As the two largest economies in the UEMOA zone, the nations are exploring joint opportunities in the mining sector and the development of cultural and creative industries. During his visit, Prime Minister Lô met with the Senegalese diaspora in Abidjan to encourage investment and entrepreneurship in support of the ‘Agenda Sénégal 2050’ national transformation plan. High-level meetings with President Alassane Ouattara further emphasized the need to transition from formal agreements to concrete results, particularly regarding regional integration within the UEMOA and ECOWAS frameworks. Discussions also highlighted current trade volumes of 250 billion FCFA and the potential for private sector collaboration to exploit shared resources, such as recent mining discoveries.
