Côte d'Ivoire fertilizer imports reach record high in 2025

Côte d'Ivoire imported 789,500 tonnes of chemical fertilizer in 2025, marking a 38% year-on-year increase and setting a new record that surpasses the previous 2023 peak of 613,527 tonnes.

According to a report by the International Fertilizer Development Center (IFDC), the surge in imports is driven by rising domestic consumption, which reached 593,107 tonnes. The cocoa and cotton sectors were primary drivers, together absorbing more than 287,250 tonnes—nearly half of the country's apparent consumption. In the cocoa sector, an increase in the guaranteed producer price, which rose from 1,800 FCFA per kilogram in 2024 to 2,800 FCFA in October 2025, helped encourage fertilizer investment.

While domestic demand grew, re-exports to hinterland countries, specifically Mali and Burkina Faso, decreased by 2% to 207,791 tonnes. Looking ahead, the World Bank forecasts that global fertilizer prices could rise by more than 30% in 2026, which may impact import and re-export volumes for the region.
