Côte d'Ivoire opposition demands inclusive dialogue on electoral reform

Opposition leaders in Côte d'Ivoire are pressing the government to broaden consultation over a proposed overhaul of the country's electoral system. Simone Ehivet Gbagbo, head of the Mouvement des Générations Capables, presented a plan for a fully independent High Electoral Council (HCE) to the PDCI‑RDA, seeking unified opposition support. The proposal calls for the HCE to operate without government or party influence, manage elections autonomously and maintain separate financial resources.

The Nouvelle Alliance de Côte d'Ivoire pour la Patrie (NACIP) criticised the Prime Minister’s June 22 meeting, describing it as a one‑way information session that excluded many parties. NACIP’s leader Jichi Mohamed (Sam l’Africain) demanded a transparent, inclusive process that allows all legally recognised parties and civil society to contribute to shaping the new electoral framework.
