Tufan Erhürman calls for rotating presidency in Cyprus negotiations
TRNC President Tufan Erhürman has expressed readiness to engage in tripartite talks with the United Nations, provided that the principle of a rotating presidency is accepted unconditionally by Greek Cypriot leader Nikos Christodoulides. Erhürman stated that he communicated this position through the UN Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy, Maria Angela Holguín, but has yet to receive a positive response.
Erhürman criticized the current state of negotiations, noting that progress has stalled regarding the seven confidence-building measures proposed by UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres. He claimed that Christodoulides presented 19 new proposals verbally rather than in writing, which Erhürman argued did not include the original seven measures.
In London, TRNC Presidential Undersecretary Mehmet Dânâ addressed the British Parliament, advocating for the removal of isolations imposed on the Turkish Cypriot community. Dânâ highlighted how recent cancellations of cultural and sporting events have hindered trust-building efforts and called on the United Kingdom, as a guarantor power, to support constructive dialogue.
