Morelos authorities arrest suspect in feminicide of Spanish student

Authorities in Morelos, Mexico, have detained Francisco Javier ‘N’, also known as ‘El Trompas’, in connection with the feminicide of Claudia Tacoronte Aguilera. Tacoronte, a 21-year-old Spanish exchange student from Granada, was killed with a knife on September 12 in Cuautla while participating in a medicinal plant festival.

The Morelos Prosecutor's Office confirmed the arrest following a coordinated operation involving federal security agencies. Investigations suggest the suspect may have also stolen the victim's cell phone. The crime has sparked significant unrest, including student-led protests where members of the Autonomous University of the State of Morelos (UAEM) interrupted a civic-military parade in Cuernavaca to demand justice and better security.

This incident is part of a broader pattern of violence; students have reported four feminicides involving UAEM students in 2026. International attention has also been drawn to the case, with Spanish officials and organizations like Amnesty International calling for a thorough investigation conducted with a gender perspective to combat impunity.
