Cuautlancingo launches reforestation to combat urban heat islands
The municipal government of Cuautlancingo participated in a reforestation initiative at Residencial Los Trojes II. This effort is part of a pilot project designed to identify and evaluate strategic actions to address urban heat islands within the Megalopolis.
Studies identified Los Trojes II as a priority area for this intervention, as urban heat islands—caused by high concentrations of concrete and asphalt combined with limited vegetation—can cause local temperatures to rise by more than one degree. During the event, 495 trees, including species such as liquidambar, oak, and aile, were planted across four areas of the residential complex to increase shade and improve thermal conditions.
The initiative involves collaboration between the municipal government, the State of Puebla, and various participating organizations. Marilyn Ballesteros García, the Secretary of Environment, Sustainable Development, and Territorial Planning for the State of Puebla, noted that the state aims to plant 2,090,000 trees by 2026 through coordinated efforts with municipalities and civil society.
