Mexican municipal reforestation initiatives

Overview

Various municipalities in Mexico are implementing reforestation programs to mitigate environmental issues such as urban heat islands and the loss of vegetation from tropical cyclones.

In Cuautlancingo, Puebla, a pilot project was launched at Residencial Los Trojes II to address urban heat islands. The initiative involved planting 495 trees, including oak and liquidambar, through a collaboration between the municipal government and the State of Puebla. The state has set a broader goal to plant 2,090,000 trees by 2026.

Other regions have reported progress in their own programs. In Nuevo Laredo, Tamaulipas, the ‘Arboleando NLD’ program has planted over 5,000 trees using native species like mesquite and oak. Meanwhile, in Cancún, Quintana Roo, the ‘Arboriza Cancún’ program has reached 3,600 trees planted and aims to add another 2,500 by the end of December to restore areas affected by 2020 tropical cyclones.
