Cuba and Costa Rica implement policies for International Day of Older Persons
The International Day of Older Persons, observed on October 1, serves as a focal point for addressing the challenges and contributions of the elderly in Cuba and Costa Rica.
In Cuba, the government has integrated this observance into public policy through Decree 139. The celebrations aim to promote active and healthy aging through cultural, recreational, and sporting activities. Specific measures include free admission to events for those aged 70 and differentiated pricing for products at commercial and agricultural fairs. The initiative seeks to recognize older adults as valuable contributors to social development and sustainability.
In Costa Rica, the demographic shift toward an aging population is a significant policy concern. Projections from the National Institute of Statistics and Censuses (INEC) suggest that by 2050, there will be 25 older adults for every 100 inhabitants. To address this, the country has implemented the National Policy on Aging and Old Age 2023-2033. The focus is on rethinking urban design, healthcare, social protection, and transport to ensure dignity and autonomy for a population with increasing life expectancy.
