International Day of Older Persons observances
Overview
As the International Day of Older Persons is observed, nations are expanding community initiatives to address the systemic pressures of aging demographics.
In Brazil, data from the IBGE indicates a significant demographic shift, with 35 million citizens aged 60 or older. This trend is increasing pressure on the Unified Health System (SUS) and private insurers due to rising chronic diseases and long-term care requirements. In response, various municipalities are hosting targeted programs. In Goiânia, health drives such as vaccinations and clinical assessments are being conducted; Francisco Beltrão and Araras are focusing on legal rights and fraud prevention; and São José do Rio Preto continues to promote active aging through physical activities and cognitive workshops.
Recent local efforts in Brazil have expanded to include cognitive and social integration activities. In Rio Bonito, the CRAS Centro hosted the REVIVER group for a session focused on cognitive stimulation. In Primavera do Leste, the Municipal Secretariat of Social Assistance organized a leisure trip to Balneário Lagoa to strengthen social bonds. Further expansion includes the ‘Programa Viver Melhor’ in São Gonçalo do Amarante, which brings functional exercises and music to rural community centers to combat depression and physical decline. Additionally, the ‘Rede Viva’ project in Umuarama aims to prevent institutionalization by integrating social assistance, health, and culture services to keep seniors within their family environments.
In Portugal, efforts to combat social isolation include Loulé’s month-long program and social gatherings in Madeira and Pombal. In Spain, regional events have focused on social integration and cybersecurity. In Cuba, Decree 139 promotes active aging through cultural activities and differentiated pricing for those aged 70 and older. Costa Rica is addressing demographic shifts via the National Policy on Aging and Old Age 2023-2033, focusing on urban design, healthcare, and transport.
