Cuba electrical worker dies during maintenance in Havana

Edisvey Rolando Pérez Rodríguez, a 32-year-old lineman from the Sancti Spíritus Electric Company, died from electrocution on Thursday morning while performing maintenance work in Havana.

The state-run Unión Eléctrica (UNE) classified the incident as a “work accident” and issued condolences to the family. In response to the fatality, the Sancti Spíritus Electric Company has established a specialized investigative commission to determine the exact causes and evaluate the safety measures in place during the intervention.

The death occurs amidst a severe crisis in Cuba’s electrical system, characterized by fuel shortages and low generation capacity. This instability has necessitated the mobilization of maintenance brigades from various provinces to support work in Havana. This incident follows other recent fatalities in the sector, including the death of Osmani Rosales Núñez in Matanzas this past June.
