Occupational incidents in Cuba electrical sector
Overview
Recent incidents involving electrical workers have occurred across Cuba amidst a broader crisis in the national electrical system, marked by low generation capacity and fuel shortages.
In Havana, a 32-year-old lineman from the Sancti Spíritus Electric Company, Edisvey Rolando Pérez Rodríguez, died from electrocution during maintenance work. The state-run Unión Eléctrica (UNE) labeled the event a “work accident.” An investigative commission was established to evaluate safety measures following the fatality.
In eastern Cuba, the search for Alexander Pantoja Bertot, an employee of the Santiago de Cuba Electric Company, has concluded with the discovery of his body. Pantoja Bertot had been missing since September 10 after being last seen inspecting a power line near the Gota Blanca reservoir.
A forestry brigade located his body in the El Palmar area of the Contramaestre municipality. He was found sitting against a tree; while he showed signs of advanced decomposition, there were no visible marks of physical aggression, and he still possessed his personal belongings.
Following a large-scale search involving the Ministry of the Interior, canine units, and thermal imaging drones, authorities and forensic experts have launched an investigation. A medico-legal autopsy will be conducted to determine the exact cause of death. The victim’s sister, Yaima Bertot, has called for justice and clarity regarding the circumstances of his disappearance.
