Cuba faces bread quality crisis amid flour shortages

Cuban citizens are increasingly protesting the poor quality and insufficient weight of rationed bread. Roberto D J Morales recently drew attention on social media by sharing images of substandard bread, describing it as “garbage” and “disgraceful.” He noted that the loaves do not meet expected weights and that his salary prevents him from accessing the informal market, where prices range from 450 to 2,200 pesos.

Reports of poor-quality bread have surfaced across various provinces throughout 2026. Residents in Santiago de Cuba and Guantánamo have reported issues including mold, acidity, dark spots, sour smells, and improper baking.

The crisis is driven by severe structural shortages. Cuba requires approximately 20,000 tons of wheat flour monthly, but as of June 2026, only one out of six contracted shipments had arrived. This shortage has led to official weight reductions, with standard loaves dropping from 80 grams to 60 grams in late 2024, and some provinces distributing portions as small as 40 grams.
