In Songo-La Maya, officials set reference prices of 2,500 pesos for one liter of oil and 110 pesos per egg. In Matanzas, reference prices include 3,400 pesos per kilogram for powdered milk and 400 pesos per pound for sugar. While described as reference values, businesses exceeding them face severe penalties, including fines up to 60,000 pesos, product confiscation, or license suspension. Economic pressures have intensified, with the price of oil in Matanzas exceeding 3,500 pesos per liter, surpassing the national minimum monthly wage of 3,210 pesos. State-controlled media has acknowledged that the government’s capacity to intervene is “extremely limited,” citing declining national production, heavy reliance on expensive imports, U.S. sanctions, and fluctuations in foreign trade. To combat price gouging, authorities have released hotlines for citizen reports. However, these measures have met with public skepticism; residents report that some vendors are ceasing the sale of essential goods entirely to avoid inspections, raising fears of increased shortages. Egg prices have also surged due to a severe decline in domestic poultry production, which has dropped from previous daily levels of four to five million eggs. In Manatí, Las Tunas, a single egg has reached 135 pesos, while reports from Bayamo and Holguín indicate prices between 200 and 300 pesos per unit.
