Cuba food prices rise sharply, straining household budgets

Cuban families are facing severe economic strain as the cost of basic food items, particularly bread, rises sharply against stagnant wages. Reports indicate that a typical school snack consisting of bread, guava paste, and soda can now exceed 500 pesos. For households with multiple children, meeting these daily nutritional needs is becoming increasingly difficult.

In the private sector, the cost of bread has reached levels that can consume a significant portion of a monthly minimum wage. For example, purchasing 15 bags of bread from private bakeries would cost approximately 3,000 pesos, which is the current monthly minimum wage. If a family were to purchase one bag daily, the monthly cost would reach 6,000 pesos, doubling the minimum wage.

The economic situation has been exacerbated by the removal of price caps on essential imported goods, such as oil and pasta, following recent Ministry of Finance and Prices resolutions. While the National Office of Statistics and Information reported an average monthly salary of 7,074 pesos as of April 2026, the rising cost of staples continues to outpace earnings, leaving many to rely on limited state rations that often fail to cover all daily meals.
