Cuba hosts international events to mark Fidel Castro centennial
Global and regional commemorations are underway to mark the centennial of Fidel Castro’s birth. In Havana, the first International Colloquium ‘Fidel: Legacy and Future’ has convened over 1,500 delegates from 63 countries. Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel addressed the assembly, framing Castro’s ideas as a ‘compass’ to navigate current economic and political challenges, specifically citing the impact of the U.S. blockade.
International solidarity is evident through various actions: China’s Xi Jinping sent a message to Cuban leadership emphasizing the historical ties between the two nations; Bolivia’s MBSC organized a campaign to donate solar panels to Cuba; and Brazilian groups held film screenings and fundraising efforts. In Nicaragua, the government began installing a metal sculpture in Managua to honor the late leader.
Cultural and local events are also being held, including the 34th Havana International Book Fair, which pays tribute to Castro, and various regional exhibitions and volunteer workdays across Cuba, such as in Matanzas and Baracoa, to celebrate his historical impact.
