Cuba centenary celebrations for Fidel Castro

In July 2026 Cuba officially marked 2026 as the “Year of the Centenary of Fidel Castro Ruz,” a program launched by the parliament at President Miguel Díaz‑Canel’s proposal. The commemorations, which began in August 2025, were scheduled to run through December 2026 and were designed to involve all sectors of society, with a strong emphasis on youth participation.

A flagship event, the International Colloquium “Fidel: Legacy and Future,” was set for 10‑13 August 2026 at Havana’s Convention Palace, organized by student and cultural groups. At the local level, the town of Cauto Cristo’s public library staged a twelve‑event cultural programme, including exhibitions, poetry teas, and workshops aimed at promoting Castro’s revolutionary legacy.

Later in August, Havana hosted two high‑profile gatherings to further the centenary narrative. The International Book Fair (10‑16 August) featured millions of titles, e‑book showcases and awards, with Russia as guest of honor alongside delegations from China, Mexico, Argentina, Venezuela, Brazil and Spain. Concurrently, the IV Continental Assembly of ALBA Movimientos (6‑9 August) brought over 150 delegates from 25 countries to discuss regional unity and the economic blockade, framing the event as a political response to external pressures while celebrating the revolutionary heritage.
