Cuba provinces impose price caps on essential goods amid inflation
Several Cuban provinces, including Villa Clara, Guantánamo, Santiago de Cuba, Holguín, and Matanzas, have implemented new price caps on essential goods to combat rising inflation. In Villa Clara, the Provincial Council of People's Power established a maximum commercial margin of 30% for wholesale and retail prices. Specific retail limits include 2,500 pesos per liter for oil, 110 pesos per egg, 3,465 pesos per kilogram for powdered milk, 410 pesos per pound for sugar, and 1,500 pesos for 1kg of sausages.
Economists have criticized these measures, noting they contradict recent national economic reforms intended to end centralized price controls. Critics argue that these unilateral provincial decisions may lead to further shortages, as seen in previous attempts at price regulation. In some areas, such as Placetas, egg prices reportedly surged from 40 to 200 pesos in a single day, while oil prices have reached as high as 4,000 to 7,000 pesos per unit.
Authorities have warned of severe penalties for those violating these regulations, including fines, product seizures, forced sales, and the permanent cancellation of business licenses or self-employment permits.
