Cuba implements new price controls on essential goods

Authorities in Cuba are implementing new price controls on essential goods across various provinces to combat escalating costs and inflation. In Isla de la Juventud, the Municipal Administration Council has set maximum prices for items including oil at 2,300 pesos per liter, chicken at 620 pesos per pound, and eggs at 110 pesos each. Similar regulations have been seen in Villa Clara, though price variations exist between territories for certain products like cooking oil.

In Camagüey, recent inspection operations targeting both state and private establishments have met with public criticism. While inspectors identified 26 violations related to documentation and electronic payment misuse, residents report that the measures have not solved the scarcity of basic supplies. Locals have expressed frustration, alleging that merchants often hide goods or close temporarily during inspections to evade scrutiny, describing the government efforts as a “charade” while essential items like chicken and oil remain difficult to find.
