Cuba launches nationwide centennial celebrations for Fidel Castro 2026

Cuba has declared 2026 the “Year of the Centenary of Fidel Castro Ruz,” a programme announced by the Cuban parliament at the proposal of President Miguel Díaz‑Canel Bermúdez. The commemorations began in August 2025 and will run through December 2026, covering all sectors of society and emphasising youth participation. A flagship event will be the International Colloquium “Fidel: Legacy and Future,” held 10‑13 August 2026 at Havana’s Convention Palace, organised by the Federación Estudiantil Universitaria and the Fidel Castro Ruz Centre.

In the town of Cauto Cristo, the public library is staging a twelve‑event cultural programme to mark the centenary. Director Yudisniel Pérez Pérez highlighted the exhibition “Fidel for ever,” featuring titles such as “Buenos días Fidel” and “Cien horas con Fidel.” Activities will include a poetry tea, reading festivals, workshops for children and community‑wide exhibitions, all intended to promote the revolutionary and humanitarian values of the former leader. President Díaz‑Canel urged citizens to “fight today a historic battle: a new Moncada!” as the nation honours Castro’s legacy.
