Cuba celebrates 50 years of Municipal Assemblies of People's Power
Cuba is marking the 50th anniversary of the constitution of its Municipal Assemblies of People's Power, which were established nationwide on October 31, 1976. The milestone is being observed through solemn sessions and cultural galas across various provinces, including Santa Clara, Cienfuegos, Matanzas, Granma, Isla de la Juventud, Colón, Puerto Padre, and Las Tunas.
National leaders, including Esteban Lazo, President of the National Assembly of People's Power, and Prime Minister Manuel Marrero, participated in commemorative events. The assemblies serve as the highest local state authority, with delegates elected directly by neighbors in open assemblies rather than being nominated by political parties.
During the celebrations, numerous delegates and workers were recognized for their long-term service. Notable honors were given to founding delegates who have maintained their roles for five decades, such as Luis Palmero Hernández in Cumanayagua and Nilson Reynaldo Cruz in Puerto Padre. The anniversary highlights the institutionalized role of these local bodies in managing community affairs and representing citizens within the Cuban political structure.
