Cuba People's Power 50th anniversary commemorations

Overview

Cuba is marking the 50th anniversary of the establishment of its local People's Power organs, which were officially constituted on October 31, 1976. Commemorations involve community meetings, solemn sessions, and honors for long-serving delegates across various provinces, including Santa Clara, Cienfuegos, Camagüey, Guantánamo, Las Tunas, Matanzas, Granma, Isla de la Juventud, Colón, and Puerto Padre.

National leaders, such as Esteban Lazo Hernández, President of the National Assembly of People's Power, and Prime Minister Manuel Marrero Cruz, have participated in discussions regarding the system's role in social management and community transformation. At the National Capitol in Havana, officials discussed the “Mi Barrio por la Patria” movement, which seeks to enhance security, production, and community participation. Discussions also emphasized municipal autonomy and the importance of vigilance in protecting state resources.

Recent commemorative sessions have continued to honor individual service. In Havana, delegates from Matanzas were recognized at the National Capitol. Mario Manuel Herrera Hernández, an 80-year-old delegate from Colón, received the CDR Neighborhood Award, while Randy Perdomo García was awarded the Medal for Defense of the Homeland and Neighborhood Unity. Perdomo García suggested designating October 31 as a national day to celebrate delegate work and highlighted the necessity of reducing bureaucracy within the system.

In Santa Clara, a session at the Central University of Las Villas theater recognized the role of delegates in community life. During this event, 111 delegates received the 50th-anniversary condition, and 18 were awarded the 50th Anniversary Commemorative Seal for ten or more years of continuous service. Local distinctions, such as the Illustrious Son of the City, were awarded to delegates José Antonio Pacheco, Ignacio Abreu Martínez, and Delvis Moya Machado.
