Cuba men's volleyball defeats Dominican Republic in NORCECA debut
The Cuban men's national volleyball team secured a 3-0 victory against the Dominican Republic in their debut at the NORCECA Men's Continental Championship in Moncton, Canada. The match, which lasted one hour and five minutes, saw Cuba dominate in blocking with a 19-4 advantage. Alejandro Miguel González led the Cuban offense with 15 points, followed by Osniel Lázaro Mergarejo with 10.
Prior to the victory, the team faced significant logistical challenges. Due to management issues within the Cuban Volleyball Federation (FCV) and the National Institute of Sports, Physical Education and Recreation (Inder), the squad had to be split into two separate groups to travel to Canada. One group traveled via Panama and the other via Mexico, causing delays in their arrival. These logistical errors forced a rescheduling of their opening match against the Dominican Republic from 19:00 to 16:00.
The tournament serves as a qualifier for the 2027 World Championship and the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games. Cuba's next scheduled matches include a game against Guatemala and a preliminary phase conclusion against the United States.
