Cuba restructures government to reduce ministries to 20
The Cuban government has officially announced a major restructuring of its executive branch, reducing the total number of ministries from 27 to 20. This measure, aimed at addressing the country's ongoing crisis, was formalized through Law 186, titled “De Organización de la Administración Central del Estado.”
The new structure involves merging and reordering various state portfolios to streamline administration. Key new or reorganized entities include the Ministry of Economy and Finance, the Ministry of Agriculture and Food, and the Ministry of Commerce and Foreign Investment. Other consolidated departments include Culture, Sports and Recreation, Education, Higher Education, Science and Innovation, Energy and Mines, Industry and Construction, and Information and Social Communication.
The Central Bank of Cuba (BCC) will maintain its status as a central state administration body led by a minister-president. Following the law's entry into force, ministers have 30 days to present work schedules to Prime Minister Manuel Marrero. A transition period of up to one year has been established to complete the redistribution of human, material, and budgetary resources.
