Cuba revitalizes transport services in Granma and Las Tunas
Public transportation services are undergoing revitalization and planned reopenings in the Cuban provinces of Granma and Las Tunas.
In Granma, a railway service has been restored on the Bayamo – Julia – Mabay route. Initially operating three days a week—Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday—the service aims to expand to a Monday-through-Saturday schedule. The service includes standard trips for 300 pesos and express cargo services for 500 pesos. This initiative, described by railway officials as a success for workers and students, resulted from collaboration between state and non-state economic actors.
In Las Tunas, authorities are preparing a gradual reopening of public transport routes, which are currently inactive. The provincial plan involves both road and rail services. To facilitate this, the Ministry of Transport will enable a dedicated fuel card for provincial transport authorities to ensure fuel is used exclusively for passenger services. The strategy also includes utilizing non-state sectors for fuel procurement and managing routes through existing terminals to prevent illegalities. Efforts are underway to restore urban trains and inter-municipal services, including connections to remote communities.
