Cuba sentences content creator Anna Bensi to two years of liberty limitation

A Cuban court has sentenced content creator Anna Bensi and her mother, Caridad Silvente, to two years of liberty limitation. The ruling by the East Havana Municipal Popular Court follows the recording and social media distribution of a video featuring an undercover police officer who visited their home in March to deliver a summons.

The defendants were convicted of “acts against personal and family privacy, one's own image and voice, the identity of another person and their data,” under Article 393 of the Cuban Penal Code. While the sentence does not involve imprisonment, it imposes significant restrictions, including prohibitions on leaving the country or changing residences without judicial authorization.

The United States government has called for their release. The U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for Western Hemisphere Affairs criticized the Cuban authorities, accusing the regime of censoring those who express differing opinions and labeling the sanctions as unjust.
