Legal proceedings against Anna Bensi in Cuba

Overview

A court in Havana has sentenced 21-year-old content creator Anna Sofía Benítez Silvente, known as Anna Bensi, and her mother, Caridad Silvente Laffita, to two years of liberty limitation. The East Havana Municipal Popular Court found the women guilty of violating the privacy of a Ministry of the Interior (MININT) agent after recording and sharing a video of the officer visiting their home to deliver a summons.

The defendants were convicted under Article 393 of the Cuban Penal Code for “acts against personal and family privacy, one's own image and voice, the identity of another person and their data.” While the sentence does not involve imprisonment, it imposes significant restrictions, such as prohibitions on leaving the country or changing residences without judicial authorization.

The judicial process was marked by heavy police presence and reports of internet disruptions. During the proceedings, Pastor Rolando Pérez Lora was reportedly detained by authorities while attempting to attend the trial in solidarity.

Following the verdict, multiple Cuban Protestant denominations—including the Assemblies of God, the Western Cuban Baptist Convention, the Evangelical League of Cuba, and the Methodist Church of Cuba—issued joint statements characterizing the prosecution as unjust. The United States government has also intervened, with the U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for Western Hemisphere Affairs criticizing the Cuban authorities and accusing the regime of censoring differing opinions.
