Cuban activist Alina Bárbara López detained and later reported missing after protest

Cuban historian and activist Alina Bárbara López Hernández was arrested twice on July 18, the International Nelson Mandela Day, while carrying out her regular monthly civic protest in Matanzas. She described the second detention as "surreal" and likened it to a kidnapping. The arrests were linked to a longstanding case‑40 house‑arrest order that could keep her in detention at the authorities’ discretion.

Later that day, López was taken by State Security agents and subsequently reported missing. Her family, human‑rights organizations and the Academic Freedom Observatory issued alerts, calling for international solidarity and demanding that Cuban authorities disclose her whereabouts.
