On 27 July Otero clarified that his experience should not be taken as representative of all Cuban political prisoners, noting that fellow activist Maykel Osorbo remains detained despite a granted U.S. humanitarian parole. Simultaneously, hunger‑strike protests have intensified: Guillermo del Sol is on a 40‑day strike demanding the release of 18 prisoners, and several other inmates have begun hunger strikes to protest conditions and repression. By late July, Otero warned of conditions for a “lapidary social explosion” in Cuba that could surpass the 2021 protests.

On 14 August 2026, the Museum of Art and Design at Miami Dade College (MOAD) will host a program at the Freedom Tower titled ‘Luis Manuel Otero Alcántara: nos encontramos’. The event will showcase prison‑made art produced during his five‑year imprisonment, featuring a large‑scale installation and drawings exploring themes of power, labor, loss, and self‑determination.
