Cuban activist Luis Manuel Otero Alcántara reaches US after five‑year political imprisonment

Luis Manuel Otero Alcántara, artist and founder of Cuba’s San Isidro Movement, was released from Guanajay prison on 7 July after serving five years as a political detainee. State Security transferred him to a house near Guanabo, where he remained under constant surveillance and had all conversations recorded. He was granted an individual humanitarian parole on 17 July and travelled to Miami the following weekend.

In interviews he said he was still effectively a prisoner, noting that officials used the period to assess his emotional state and willingness to negotiate. International bodies, including the UN Committee on Enforced Disappearances and Amnesty International, condemned his treatment as a forced disappearance and called for his unconditional release. From exile, Otero Alcántara says he will continue artistic work and activism to demand freedom for Cuba’s political prisoners.
