Cuban activist Yunia Figueredo placed under house arrest

Cuban independent journalist and activist Yunia Figueredo and her husband, journalist Frank Correa, have faced increased pressure from State Security authorities in Havana. Following separate interrogations at the Siboney police station, authorities accused the couple of inciting recent social unrest in the Jaimanitas area during protests on August 29 and 30.

Figueredo denied participating in the demonstrations, stating that the couple remained inside their home during the unrest. The couple refused to sign warning documents prepared by officials, which were subsequently added to their files. As a result, Figueredo has been placed under house arrest and is prohibited from leaving the Playa municipality. Authorities reportedly threatened her with definitive imprisonment during her next summons.

The crackdown follows a period of heightened social tension in Cuba driven by food shortages, frequent power outages, and lack of potable water. Previous incidents involving the couple include threats regarding their daughter's university studies and the brief detention of Correa in public.
