Overview

Independent Cuban journalists Yunia Figueredo Cruz and Frank Correa have faced increasing pressure and harassment from State Security authorities in Havana. Following protests in the Jaimanitas area in late August, authorities accused the couple of inciting social unrest. Figueredo denied involvement, stating the couple remained at home during the demonstrations.

As a result of their refusal to sign official warning documents, Figueredo was placed under house arrest and prohibited from leaving the Playa municipality. Reports indicate she is also required to report to a police station monthly and has faced threats of definitive imprisonment.

The repression includes surveillance, arbitrary detentions, and interrogations. In one instance, the couple was held for over 16 hours without communication. Authorities have also reportedly targeted their family, including threats made toward Figueredo’s daughter. These actions appear to be retaliation for the journalists’ reporting on local issues such as power outages, waste accumulation, and citizen protests.
