Luis Manuel Otero Alcántara arrives in Miami after five‑year imprisonment and exile

Cuban artist and dissident Luis Manuel Otero Alcántara was released from Guanajay prison after serving a five‑year sentence and granted a U.S. humanitarian parole that required his permanent departure from Cuba. He landed at Miami International Airport on 18 July 2026, where a crowd of supporters draped him in a Cuban flag bearing the slogan “Patria y Vida”. Shortly after his arrival he performed a symbolic reconstruction of a broken Virgin of Charity at the Shrine of Our Lady of Charity, calling the act “Assembling the Broken Virgin”. Otero, co‑founder of the San Isidro Movement, said his mission is to keep fighting for a prosperous Cuba. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio welcomed him, stating, “We ask for the immediate release of more than 700 political prisoners” and urged the Cuban government to hold free elections. Other U.S. officials, including Rep. Mario Díaz‑Balart, echoed the call for the release of political detainees. Human‑rights groups such as Amnesty International, Freedom House and PEN International hailed his freedom but condemned the forced exile as a further rights violation.
