Cuban artist Luis Manuel Otero Alcántara pushes for democratic Cuba from Miami

Luis Manuel Otero Alcántara, a Cuban visual artist and activist, arrived in Miami after spending five years in prison in Cuba and being released on July 8, 2026. In a CNN interview he said the future of Cuba must be decided by its own people, emphasizing that “the only crime” he committed was using art to demand basic freedoms. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio welcomed his arrival, calling his exile a stand for democracy.

Speaking with journalist Tania Costa, Otero Alcántara stressed collective responsibility, urging Cubans at home and abroad to invest in the island’s economy by hiring local workers and rebuilding homes. He described the July 11, 2021 protests as a radical moment and warned that without strong democratic institutions a new authoritarian leader could emerge. He blamed the regime for fostering “civic illiteracy” that hinders change, and called for hard work rather than reliance on any savior to achieve a free and prosperous Cuba.
