Cuenca allocates 150,000 euros for municipal Roman archaeological sites

The Diputación de Cuenca has launched a new grant program totaling 150,000 euros to support the management, conservation, and promotion of municipal Roman and pre-Roman archaeological sites. This initiative marks a shift in provincial heritage policy, moving beyond large-scale infrastructure projects to support the daily operational needs of smaller municipalities.

Eligible recipients include town councils and local territorial entities. The program can finance up to 100% of approved project budgets, with a maximum subsidy of 20,000 euros per application. Funds are intended for routine maintenance such as cleaning, brush clearing, fence repairs, and surveillance systems, as well as tourism activities like guided tours and historical reenactments.

Projects must be executed between 2026 and October 31, 2027. To qualify, sites must generally demonstrate they have remained open to the public for at least two months per year, though the program also allows for the initial opening of previously inaccessible archaeological enclaves.
