Two students from the Universidad Autónoma del Estado de Morelos (UAEM) Preparatoria Número 2, identified as Gael and Christian Shamed, were killed in an armed attack in the Chulavista neighborhood of Cuernavaca on the night of Saturday, September 26, 2026. The victims, aged 17, were reportedly on motorcycles after attending a birthday party when gunmen opened fire. A third teenager was injured in the incident and transported to a hospital.

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has ordered the Ministry of the Interior and the Ministry of Security to review prevention strategies in Morelos, specifically targeting Cuernavaca and Cuautla. The federal government aims to coordinate with state authorities to redesign risk maps near educational centers and ensure safer routes for students and faculty.

This violence follows the murder of Spanish exchange student Claudia Tacoronte in Cuautla approximately two weeks earlier. The UAEM community and the National Association of Universities (ANUIES) have demanded an exhaustive investigation and increased security measures to protect students from rising crime in the region.
