Cuiabá sees 74% rise in influenza cases and 21 deaths

The municipal health department of Cuiabá recorded 2,239 influenza notifications for epidemiological weeks 1‑25 of 2026, a 74.02% increase compared with the same period in 2025. Of these, 1,742 cases were among city residents. Children up to six years accounted for the largest share with 893 reports, followed by adults 15‑59 (634 cases), youths 7‑14 (540 cases) and seniors 60+ (172 cases).

The surge also raised the burden of severe acute respiratory syndrome (SRAG): 325 hospitalisations were linked to influenza, 254 of them involving Cuiabá residents. Twenty‑one influenza‑related deaths were confirmed, 16 among locals, most of them seniors (14 aged over 60). Vaccination against influenza remains available at the city’s 72 Family Health Units for priority groups, and officials continue to urge hand hygiene, respiratory etiquette and timely medical care.

A nationwide SRAG bulletin from Fiocruz placed Cuiabá among 11 capitals in alert or risk levels, alongside Rio Branco (Acre) and others. Although the overall trend shows stabilization or decline in many regions, health authorities caution against relaxing protective measures as the virus continues to circulate widely across Brazil.
