Cultural developments in Serbia: Theater performances and reconstruction plans

Cultural developments are underway in Serbia, including a theatrical performance in Bečej and a major reconstruction project in Zaječar.

The Serbian National Theatre from Novi Sad is performing the comic opera ‘Pokondirena tikva’ at the Bečej City Theater. Based on the comedy by Jovan Sterija Popović with music by Mihovil Logar, the production is directed by Ivan Klemenc and features performers from the SNP Opera Studio. The play explores themes of social superficiality and vanity.

In Zaječar, a concept for the reconstruction and adaptation of the local theater has been presented. The project, which has been included in the ‘Serbia 2028–2030’ plan following coordination with the Ministry of Culture, aims to add between 800 and 1,000 square meters of new space. The goal is to equip the facility with modern stage technology, potentially making it one of the most modern theaters in the Balkan region. The building is currently under the protection of the Institute for the Protection of Cultural Monuments.
