Cultural heritage events announced in Italy for October 2026

Archaeological excavations led by the University of Padua have resumed at the Rocca di Monselice. The fifth campaign, running from September 14 to October 9, 2026, aims to deepen knowledge of the monumental complex. A primary focus is the investigation of a large medieval cemetery located south of the Church of Santa Giustina, an area significantly altered by the construction of the Frederickian keep in the 13th century.

To promote cultural heritage, the public is invited to observe the archaeologists at work during three specific days: October 1, October 4, and October 7, 2026. Details regarding schedules and participation will be released via the Castello di Monselice website.

Separately, the ‘Domenica di Carta 2026’ initiative will take place on October 4, opening various archives and libraries across Italy to the public. The event features exhibitions, workshops, and tours of historical buildings. In Rome, the Archivio di Stato di Roma will host an exhibition titled ‘Come Sole frà le stelle’ regarding the Roman stay of Queen Christina of Sweden, including workshops inspired by her 17th-century court.
