Cultural updates: Cádiz carnival rules and Mexico dance competition

The City Council of Cádiz has approved the regulations for the 2027 COAC carnival competition. Key changes include the number of groups advancing to various stages: 46 groups will proceed to the quarterfinals and 27 to the semifinals. The final will maintain a format of four groups per modality. Additionally, the rules for 'cabezas de serie' (seeded groups) have been modified; those who reached the 2026 quarterfinals may voluntarily accept seeded status to perform in the second or fourth slots of a session. Notably, quartets will no longer participate in the quarterfinals, moving directly from preliminaries to the semifinals.

In Mexico, the Guillermo Arriaga National Dance Prize 2026 will hold its preliminary rounds from August 26 to 30 at the Teatro de la Danza Guillermina Bravo. The competition features 29 choreographies from creators across 13 Mexican states, categorized by career stage: emerging, consolidating, and consolidated. This edition coincides with the 80th anniversary of the National Institute of Fine Arts and Literature (INBAL) and the centenary of Guillermo Arriaga's birth. The final stage is scheduled for September 1 at the Palacio de Bellas Artes.
