Cádiz COAC 2027 carnival competition preparations
Overview
Following the approval of new regulations for the 2027 Concurso Oficial de Agrupaciones Carnavalescas (COAC) in Cádiz, prominent carnival artists have begun announcing their specific projects for the upcoming competition at the Gran Teatro Falla.
Key announcements include Álex ‘El Peluca’, who revealed his chirigota name and confirmed participation in the comparsa category alongside Ángel Subiela. Additionally, Miguel Ángel García Argüez, known as ‘El Chapa’, announced his debut as a solo comparsa performer with ‘La plaga’. In the quartet category, the Romero Castellón brothers are reuniting with the group ‘Nos tienen que matar’.
The registration period closed on October 1. While initial counts indicated 157 groups (106 adult, 23 youth, and 28 children), recent reports suggest the number of registered groups may be as high as 185, including 124 adult, 26 youth, and 35 children's groups, pending final documentation verification. This remains a decrease from the 180 groups in the 2026 edition.
Due to the high number of participants, rumors are circulating regarding a potential change to the competition start date. While currently scheduled for January 8, there is speculation the event could begin as early as January 7. The Cádiz City Council is reportedly reviewing the schedule.
Beyond the COAC, the Provincial Culture Foundation of the Cádiz Deputation has opened a call to manage carnival resources for 2027. This initiative aims to support performances in municipalities with up to 50,000 inhabitants between February 6 and March 14, involving various modalities regardless of COAC participation.
