Curitiba councilor Tathiana Guzella faces cassation request after xenophobic remark
On 5 August 2026, during a session of the Curitiba Municipal Chamber debating a municipal registry for people in street‑situations, councilor Tathiana Guzella (PL) asked fellow councilor Vanda de Assis (PT), who was born in Ceará, to “go back to Ceará”. Vanda denounced the comment as xenophobic.
Vanda de Assis subsequently filed a criminal complaint with the Federal Public Prosecutor’s Office and the Paraná State Prosecutor’s Office, which have both opened investigations into possible discrimination. Four separate cassation requests have also been submitted to the council, alleging a breach of parliamentary decorum. Guzella has denied the accusations, saying her remarks were a political critique of PT‑run policies in Ceará rather than an act of prejudice. The council’s ethics committee is scheduled to examine the cassation petitions on 12 August, after which any disciplinary action will be determined.
