Curitiba hospital under investigation after wrong-site knee surgery
A 72-year-old woman, Marilda da Silva, underwent knee arthroplasty at the Hospital Cruz Vermelha in Curitiba, Brazil, only to discover that the prosthesis was implanted in her right knee instead of the scheduled left knee.
The surgery took place on September 30. The patient's daughter, Sabrina da Silva, stated that all prior exams indicated the left knee required the procedure. The physician reportedly claimed the surgery was performed on the right knee because the patient, while under sedation, insisted on it. However, the patient maintains she has no memory of making such a request.
The Regional Medical Council of Paraná (CRM-PR) has opened an inquiry to investigate the conduct of the healthcare professionals involved. If ethical violations are proven, sanctions could range from confidential warnings to the revocation of professional licenses.
The hospital has launched an internal investigation and stated it is providing follow-up care with an orthopedic specialist. The family reports that the patient is currently unable to move easily as both legs are affected. A second surgery to correct the error can only occur in approximately 45 days due to blood loss during the initial procedure.
