Medical error investigation in Curitiba hospital
Overview
A 72-year-old woman, Marilda da Silva, underwent knee replacement surgery on the wrong leg at Hospital Cruz Vermelha in Curitiba, Brazil. Although medical evaluations and exams indicated the left knee required the procedure, the prosthesis was implanted in her right knee.
The patient’s daughter, Sabrina da Silva, noted that no surgical site marking was performed prior to the operation. While the medical team claimed the change occurred because the patient allegedly requested the switch while under sedation, the patient maintains she has no memory of making such a request.
Both the hospital and the Regional Medical Council of Paraná (CRM-PR) have launched investigations into the incident. The hospital is reviewing technical records and providing follow-up care, while the CRM-PR inquiry will investigate the conduct of the healthcare professionals involved. If ethical violations are proven, sanctions could include the revocation of professional licenses.
