Ubatuba Highlights: Top Beaches and New Native Tree Planting Initiative

Ubatuba, a coastal city in São Paulo state, boasts more than 100 beaches and 16 islands. Three standout locations are Praia do Félix, known for calm waters and surfable waves; Praia do Lázaro, a family‑friendly beach with scenic mountains; and Ilha das Couves, a preserved island offering crystal‑clear waters for diving. The city’s ecotourism appeal is complemented by the Projeto Tamar marine‑turtle conservation program and a vibrant local dining scene.

On 29 June, the municipal government planted 50 native seedlings – grumixama, uvaia, jaracatiá, guanandi and cabeludinha – in the Rio Grande Permanent Preservation Area. The effort is part of the “Ubatuba sem Bitucas” program, which aims for carbon neutrality by offsetting emissions and has already collected one million discarded cigarette butts. As Tatiana Araújo of Poiato Recicla explained, “A compensação é uma das ferramentas disponíveis para mitigar esse impacto, por meio de projetos de restauração ambiental, como o plantio de árvores nativas.”
