Cursor launches low-cost India subscription for AI coding developers

AI coding startup Cursor introduced a country‑specific subscription plan called Cursor Start for developers in India, pricing it at 649 rupees (about US$7) per month, well below its standard US$20 Pro tier. The plan runs on Cursor’s own AI models, Composer 2.5 and Grok 4.5, and omits frontier models from OpenAI and Anthropic, which helps keep costs low.

The offering includes cloud agents, an iOS app, plugins and higher usage limits than the free tier, but excludes advanced features such as Bugbot, Auto Mode and the Cursor SDK. India is Cursor’s third‑largest market, with the user base having more than tripled to over three million developers in the past year, and GitHub reporting over 27 million developers in the country, second only to the United States. The company sees the move as a way to capture the fast‑growing pool of Indian software engineers while maintaining a sustainable commercial model.

Cursor’s head of Asia‑Pacific and Japan, Simon Green, said the localized pricing is intended to “right‑size the commercial model and drive scale.” The firm is also expanding its on‑ground presence with hiring in Bengaluru, Chennai and Hyderabad as it prepares for a planned acquisition by SpaceX.
