Peru road accident kills at least 13 people in Cusco
A fatal traffic accident in the Cusco region of Peru has resulted in at least 13 deaths and four injuries. The collision occurred in the early hours of Saturday in the Pallpata district, within the Espinar province, on the road connecting Cusco and Arequipa.
According to police reports, a passenger minivan traveling from Challhuahuacho collided with the rear of a heavy truck (semi-trailer) that had stopped on the road, reportedly due to mechanical failure. The victims include the minivan driver, Raúl Rómulo Huamaní Enríquez, 36, several women, men, and children.
Authorities are investigating the exact circumstances of the crash, including potential factors such as excessive speed. The truck driver, identified as 72-year-old Ángel Quisiyupanqui, was detained by police. Emergency services transported the injured to hospitals in Arequipa, while the deceased were taken to the Espinar morgue.
