Fatal road accidents in Peru
Overview
Fatal traffic accidents involving minibans have occurred in different regions of Peru. In July, a minivan plunged over a 200-meter gorge on the Interoceánica Sur highway near Nasca, resulting in the deaths of two musicians and injuring a dozen others; investigators focused on potential driver fatigue.
In August, a collision in the Cusco region's Espinar province resulted in at least 13 deaths and four injuries. The accident occurred in the early hours of a Saturday in the Pallpata district on the highway connecting Cusco and Arequipa. A Transportes Russo minivan, traveling from Challhuahuacho, struck the rear of a stationary semi-trailer that had reportedly stopped due to mechanical failure.
The deceased include the minivan driver, 36-year-old Raúl Rómulo Huamaní Enríquez, along with several men, women, and children. Identifying all victims was complicated by the absence of a required passenger manifest. The 72-year-old truck driver, Ángel Quisiyupanqui, was detained by police. While the truck driver claimed he used safety cones and a cell phone light to signal his presence, authorities are investigating whether excessive speed or the positioning of the stationary vehicle contributed to the crash. The injured were transported to hospitals in Arequipa, while the deceased were taken to the Espinar morgue.
