Customs officials seize 90 reptiles at Cologne/Bonn Airport
Customs officials at Cologne/Bonn Airport discovered approximately 90 venomous snakes and rare lizards hidden in a suitcase belonging to a Mexican firefighter. The shipment included 55 lizards and 37 snakes, primarily venomous vipers, which are native to the mountains of South America.
According to the Cologne Main Customs Office, some of the species are endangered or strictly protected. The animals were transported in cramped, illegal hiding places without food or water during a flight from Mexico City to Germany via Istanbul. Due to the conditions of the journey, some of the reptiles have already died, while others have been handed over to specialists to attempt recovery.
An investigation into the individual has been initiated.
